Every so often we hear a complaint that a differential is making noise on slow turns. This is always on a street car where the diff has been rebuilt with extra clutches to increase lockup percentage. Most often, the diff has been rebuilt with racing clutches and what you are hearing is those clutches trying to lock up, doing their job.
Racing clutches like those from Racing Diffs Ltd., are a composite of Molybdenum/Ceramic and are very aggressive. They lock up more quickly than the OEM clutches from BMW or Porsche which are softer, a more “organic” compound. Because racing clutches lock up so fast, they don’t wear as fast as the OEM clutches. The OEM clutches have to spin more to connect with the sliding plates that they mate to. That causes early wear.
We will install either clutches depending on what you want, just let us know. The Racing Diff clutches are extremely effective and very high quality. They are meant for track use. That’s why the company is called Racing Diffs and not Street Diffs! Keep rolling!
